Bakewell is a truly picturesque market town that crosses the River Wye and lies right in the heart of the Peak District National Park. The town dates back to Saxon times and is home to the famous Bakewell pudding.
Standing high on the hillside, is the church which originates from 920 and the point at which the town originally started. It had rebuild work in the 13th century and an extensive renovation in the 1840’s but still retains some Norman and Saxon stonework.
Other notable places to visit include the Old House Museum, the Old Town Hall and the Rutland Arms Hotel; mentioned in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and where she is said to have stayed around 1811.
Bakewell has a wide variety of interesting shops, pubs, and restaurants in and around the town and also has its famous market each Monday.
Take a stroll along the river and take time to feed the ducks and swans or even apply for a permit to fly fish the rainbow and brown trout, that are plentiful in the river Wye. The Golf Club in Bakewell allows day visitors, so why not get a round in whilst you are here.
Take the children to the park where they can play and splash in the paddling pool. Next to the park is where you can watch the hot air balloons take off or better still why not take a ride in one yourself. Visit the agricultural centre which often has special events taking place; as well as the weekly livestock auctions.
All of the above are either on our doorstep or within a five minute walk of The Haven.
