UK Holiday Guide - Cumbria and the Lake District

Guide to Accommodation and Attractions in Cumbria

Cumbria or the Lake District is a place where people live and work. Cumbria is a region with an identifiable culture of its own, its own traditions, its own customs and folklore and its own heritage. One third of those employed are directly dependant on tourism.

The lake District has a spectacular landscape with 16 major lakes and hundreds of tarns which were carved out of the landscape during the last ice age, all set amidst the highest mountains in England. The Lake District attracts some 12 million visitors each year, many from abroad. The park is cared for by the Lake District National Park Authority in partnership with other organisations.

There are over 300 towns and villages in the Lake District National park, though many of these consist of no more than perhaps a couple of cottages and a farm. The larger and more bustling towns, and the picturesque villages, nestle against a scenic backdrop of countryside and coast.

Small villages and settlements pepper the quiet lanes and byways of the Lake District. All with their own story to tell, explore these ancient settlements on foot or by car.

Top quality attractions, welcoming accommodation and colourful festivals make these towns and villages an intriguing destination all year round.
